Not being completely transparent is just that: not being completely transparent. And what follows? Barriers. As humans we are naturally curious beings, at least last I checked. So only half the story sets up a tantalizing circumstance. Our imaginations will run wild—and you really can’t make this shit up.
For example, in music, we expect to hear the resolution of a song. If we don't, we're left hanging. A memorable scene in the period film Amadeus illustrates this point. F. Murray Abraham's conniving character, Antonio Salieri, advises Mozart, his nemesis, by saying, "You know you didn't even give them a good bang at the end of songs, to let them know when to clap!" This quote not only emphasizes the importance of resolution but also highlights the negative impact of withholding information. And consider this little gem. The Dissect podcast broke down how Mac Miller (Rest in Power) conceivably created a musical circle with his album Circles. My mind is spinning now, but the particular chords in the last note are atypical and without the aforementioned resolution. We’re left hanging… and so we’re left wondering.
You know what? There's really no reason not to be transparent when working with others. We are all human, with flaws and misgivings. When we acknowledge shortcomings or realities, they become exponentially easier to discuss and address. And this applies to everything else afterward. In practice, we can overcome any challenges that arise from our collective or collaborative work by resolving issues (or even non-issues) in the present moment. So, let's just talk about it, shall we? However, it's important to note there's a difference between talking about the conversation, having the conversation, and being honest in the conversation.
Even when we are meticulous and careful in constructing and hiding behind a perfect smoke screen or lattice of pretense and image, there are inevitably voids and cracks that pique the curiosity of others. Secrets can tear us up internally. Keep everything transparent by acknowledging and speaking the truth before someone else does. It's an operating system that never needs updating.
